My Truths #65 (fennel seeds)

Chew of this…fennel seeds!  They’re good for you and addictive (in a good way). Just ½ tsp after a meal is all it takes. Chew on them for as long as you can before swallowing to release the volatile oils which help freshen your breath and aid in digestion. Look for the greener ones as they are said to be sweeter and tastier and always chose organic if you can find them. I just purchased approx. ½ cup of organic fennel seeds for less than $2 at a local health food store.

Fennel seeds have an earthy licorice flavor and are loaded with antioxidants which can help prevent cancer.  In addition, fennel seeds are said to have these other properties: anti-inflammatory, high in fibre, high in calcium and high in iron. They are also said to promote lung health by helping to reduce the symptoms of asthma, clear sinuses, and stabilize breathing.

If you don’t like chewing on them I hear you can also make fennel tea to reap the benefits. To make the tea, add a half teaspoon of crushed seeds to one cup of boiling water and then allow the mixture to steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not boil the water with the seeds in it. Instead, add seeds to the boiling water to preserve the natural oils. Keep the pot covered while steeping. Cool the herbal brew, then strain. Drink up to three cups a day.
