My Truths #108 (license to eat)

Working out does not give you a license to eat anything you want. Many people eat something that they know they shouldn’t and then go to the gym believing that they can work it off. It just doesn’t work that way!

Here is a quote from Mark Sisson which puts it in a nut shell “Food is the single most important factor in body composition. You can exercise all you want but as long as you’re eating garbage, and too much of it, you won’t get very far. Sleep matters, exercise helps, stress has an effect, but how you eat – what you eat and how much you eat – is the prime determinant of your body composition.”

I’m not saying you can’t splurge from time to time but if you think you can eat anything you want because you work out you’re going to be disappointed with your results.  The right exercise (weight bearing, medium intensity & frequent cardio and sprinting once in a while) combined with the right diet (quality protein, lots of fresh veggies, good fats, some fruit and full fat dairy if you tolerate it), in my experience, is a winning combination for achieving health and vitality.
