My Truths #32 (snacks)
If you’re hungry between meals have a snack but chose wisely! I was on Pinterest the other day and someone had posted a photo of a dozen or so “healthy” 100 calorie snacks (photo below).
Do NOT be fooled… these are NOT all the same.
Conventional wisdom tells us that “a calorie is a calorie” so it doesn’t matter which one of these snacks you choose because your body sees them all the same. This is false! If you eat the rice cakes, the triskets, the cheerios and even the fruit your body quickly converts these to sugar which elicits an insulin response which drive your body to store fat. On the other hand, if you combined these with some cheese then the fat & protein in the cheese would modify the insulin response.
In my opinion, the best choice of the bunch would be the high protein ham & cheese (of course the less processed the better) or the pretty cheese flowers followed closely by the (not very satisfying) carrots and celery. My favourite go-to snacks are missing all together: a hard-boiled egg, ½ of an avocado, some canned sardines, homemade beef jerky, nuts…
P.S. For the record I have a hard time believing that’s 100 calories worth of celery.
