My Truths #21 (sardines)

by Stephanie

Sardines make a great no carb snack! Sardines in olive oil pack an awesome nutritional punch. A whole tin can have up to 23 grams of protein and is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, iron and potassium.  Sardines are low on the oceanic food chain, and therefore contain low amounts of mercury, PCBs and the other toxins. There are few pleasures greater than mashing canned sardines, bones and all with a little mustard and eating right out of the tin. I also enjoy them with a little cream cheese, capers and pepper. I buy Brunswick Sardines in Olive Oil at $3.19 a tin. Here’s a link to a discussion about sardines and a very thorough ranking of canned sardines, brands and price.
