My Truths #16 (artificial sweeteners)
Artificial sweeteners do not help people maintain their weight or lose weight. Many people use artificial sweeteners to reduce their calorie intake, but you can actually get the opposite result. Research shows that artificial sweeteners stimulate receptors that sense sweetness in the esophagus and stomach. Expecting caloric energy, the pancreas releases insulin, which causes the body to store fat. At the same time, signals are sent to the brain, which then becomes confused as to whether or not the body is actually receiving calories. The end result is that you feel even hungrier which can lead to eating more. Whether you believe this to be true or not…the bottom line is they’re not real food! (see My Truths #7)
NOTE: I think Stevia can be considered more of a natural sweeteners than an artificial one but the commercial kind that you find in the stores is highly processed.
